Devonport’s NPL Tasmania title defence has been put on ice for a week after a forecast heatwave in Hobart saw the postponement of Saturday’s triple-header of matches at KGV Football Park.
The Strikers were set to open their 2019 season against Hobart Zebras at 2.15pm, but Football Tasmania made the move on Thursday to hold that game, along with Clarence’s game against Riverside and Kingborough’s fixture with Launceston City after temperatures were expected to hit 37 degrees.
Club president Drew Smith backed the move by the governing body, which will see Devonport now kick-off its campaign against Olympia at Valley Road on Saturday, March 9.
“A temperature of 37 degrees in Hobart would have been tough on our players,” Smith said.
“There were options to possibly play the game on Sunday (at the same venue) or move it to a completely different weekend, but we did have some potential unavailability issues on the Sunday, so we felt moving away from this weekend was the best option.
