If you were to walk into a Devonport Strikers’ team meeting in the lead-up to Saturday’s NPL Tasmania clash with Kingborough, there is a good chance you will find the number eight written on the whiteboard.
That number is the primary focus for Rick Coghlan and his men, who are determined to ensure they have an eight point lead at the top of the table by Saturday night to put the pressure on the teams that sit directly below them, South Hobart and Olympia.
Olympia, which is third on 23 points to the Strikers’ 28 points, will play Hobart Zebras on Sunday at Warrior Park, with South Hobart (second on goal difference) having the week off.
“We are very clear that by the close of business Saturday that we want to finish eight points clear, as that puts the ball back in the court of the teams chasing us who play after us,” Coghlan said.
“With South not playing, that gap will naturally open up, so we are very aware that eight points would be a very nice way to close Saturday.
